Time: Managing the most precious currency

LIFE and TIME are the world's two best teachers. LIFE teaches us to make good use of TIME, while TIME teaches us the value of LIFE.

The difference between today and tomorrow is time. Time is a precious currency. It determines who you will be tomorrow and where you will be.

Not all uses of time are equal and this reality can make a huge difference in your life. For example, people who choose to spend their time investing in others are able to build better relationships, whereas people who spend their time creating a flexible career enjoy more freedom. Depending on what you want in life, whether it's more wealth, more friendships, more freedom or more social impact, it all boils down to how you spend and manage your time.

Learning to make the most of your time is, therefore, the best thing you can do for yourself. Until we can manage time, we can manage nothing else. Efficient time management is the critical success factor. Time management, however, is a major challenge faced by most people. Here are some tips to help you to figure out how to manage your time more effectively.

  1. Planning:

Philosophers say “failure to plan is planning to fail". Planning keeps you focused on your goals. It ensures you do not waste your scarce resources on nonessential tasks and helps you prioritise the ones of extreme value. Keeping a schedule of your activities is a great idea. It enables you to get a good overview of how your day, month or year will pan out. That way, you don’t get caught off guard. Your road to success in effective time management is to stick to the plan as much as possible.

  1. Focus:

Regardless of what you are trying to do, there will always be something else competing for your attention. It’s not easy to shut everything out and focus on the task at hand. Too much multi-tasking can result in not getting anything done. The solution is to focus on just one key task at one time. This will lead to more efficiency and better use of your time.

  1. Know your goals:

Having clear and measurable goals help you in making sure that you are focusing on activities that support your overall objectives. You have to wake up in the morning knowing what you want to achieve by the close of the day.

04. Practice the isolation ritual:

Have you ever been in the middle of a vital task and you were distracted by maybe a phone call, a social media notification or even an email? Most certainly you have. Thus, when working on important tasks, practice the isolation ritual, which states that you should ensure all electronic devices are switched off for a period of time, to ensure you are not distracted. This can result in better concentration whilst performing the task at hand.

05. Take care of yourself:

Be sure to get plenty of sleep and exercise. An alert mind is a high functioning mind and one that is less tolerant of time-wasting activities.


Time is life. It is irreversible and irreplaceable. To waste your time is to waste your life, but to master, your time is to master your life. In essence, time management is life management. It is one of the essential life skills to master. Your time belongs to you. Be in control, because time waits for no-one.
